There are a lot of proven methods and techniques for women who want to give birth naturally, but there are four that are most commonly used. Here we’ll explore each method and how they can help you through a natural labor and delivery.
1. Lamaze
The Lamaze Method gained popularity in the 1950s. Its primary aim is to distract you from the pain of labor with breathing techniques, massage, and alignment (using tools such as yoga balls or birthing stools to help). Lamaze pushes for no intervention and immediate skin-to-skin contact with your baby.
2. Bradley
The Bradley Method has been around since the 1940s and it’s one of the most commonly used natural birthing method in the U.S. Similar to Lamaze, the Bradley Method focuses on relaxation through breathing and concentration with major support from your husband or midwife. It’s often referred to as “husband-coached childbirth.”
3. HypnoBirthing
In HypnoBirthing (also called the Mongan Method), women use self-hypnosis to relax and focus on the progress rather than the pain. The goal is to help your body do what it needs to do without stress or fear affecting it. HypnoBirthing is generally considered safe and, because it’s done by the mother, it can be easily controlled and she’ll never lose consciousness.
4. Water Birthing
Laboring women often find that water helps alleviate pain and takes the load off, so to speak. Water makes everything feel lighter, so it takes a lot of pressure off and helps women relax. It’s also said to be more relaxing for the baby because lights and sounds are not as bright and loud when they exit the womb and come into the world for the first time.
Choosing the Right Method For You
All four of these natural childbirth techniques have been proven effective for many women, but choosing one that feels right for you and your baby is important. Talk with your OB to see if you’re a good candidate for natural birth and what method he or she feels would work best.
