The physicians and staff at Gainesville’s All About Women health practice would like to congratulate the robotics team from P.K Yonge Developmental Research School, a North Central Florida high school, on their recent victory in Orlando’s FIRST Regional Robotics Championship.
The team of bright young minds developed a robot for a game called “recycle rush.” This robot stacks recycle bins and trash cans. The students had just six weeks to complete this very difficult task.
Thanks to their win, the Roaring Riptide Robotics team qualified to compete for the world championship that took place April 22-25 in St. Louis, Missouri.
A majority of the 21 students on the team have already expressed interest in going into a STEM career (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).
The team’s leader, Logan Hickox, told reporters: “I believe STEM is important because it’s an industry that’s always in demand, and currently there’s a lack of people in that area. So getting more high school students involved in it is really going to be the best option to get more careers in that area.”
What an excellent way to get local students interested in science and technology – not to mention build leadership skills. We are proud of you Roaring Riptides for representing our community so well!
