Miscarriages are more common than you may think. In fact, around 15% of confirmed pregnancies end in miscarriage. However, they are rarely discussed.
Facing a miscarriage is a heartbreaking experience for any family, but knowing the signs and symptoms of miscarriage can help mothers recognize their own risk.
Here are a few common symptoms and signs of miscarriage:
- Spotting or bleeding. This is one of the first signs of a miscarriage. Many expectant mothers experience bleeding at some point during a healthy pregnancy, but it is best to call your doctor for a check-up just in case.
- Cramping. If you’re experiencing strong cramps that are isolated to one side of your abdomen or are partnered with bleeding, it could be a sign of miscarriage. Back pain can also be a similar sign, especially if accompanied by bleeding.
- Vaginal Discharge. Unusual discharge is also a possible sign of miscarriage. If you notice discharge with blood clots or discharge with a distinct odor, it’s important to contact your doctor.
- Loss of Symptoms. Feeling fine after a round of nausea or breast tenderness typically means that your hormones have balanced within your pregnancy and isn’t normally cause for alarm. However, if your pregnancy symptoms have lifted in conjunction with other miscarriage signs, it could be cause for concern.
The majority of miscarriages take place within the first trimester, and some women may never experience any symptoms until the miscarriage is detected on a sonogram. Talk to your doctor about your risk of miscarriage and which signs and symptoms you should look for.
