Doctors in London have employed an MRI technique in the diagnosis of a condition that can affect twins in the womb, and the result is a pretty amazing video of what goes on inside a pregnant woman’s uterus.
The condition is called twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, and it affects identical twins. Essentially, one of the twins drains blood from the other. It’s dangerous for both. The twin being drained could be in trouble for obvious reasons, but the twin doing the draining can also end up with heart issues should the twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome go undiagnosed.
The new, detailed videos being created in London through the use of MRI technology, though, can help doctors not only better diagnose this issue, but see more specifically how serious it is. The hope is to intervene only when necessary and avoid placing undue risk on the mother and babies.
The medicine is interesting in itself, but the video created is the really amazing part. We can now see all of the activity pregnant women feel going on inside their wombs. The twins in this video, for example, look almost as though they are having a bit of a scuffle.
Check out the video below, which discusses the MRI procedure in more detail, and gives a glimpse of the fascinating world that takes place inside a pregnant womb.
