For many women and people in general, the holidays are truly not the most wonderful time of the year. Some of you may wish you could sleep through the entire season. There are a variety of reasons for holiday depression – below are some tips on helping you cope the best you possibly can.
Many may feel super depressed even more so this time of year due to the loss of a loved one that you once shared such wonderful Christmas memories with. Perhaps it is a horrible childhood experience that makes you wish Christmas away. A recent job loss, divorce or total life change experience can make you dread the season.
Although your pain and feelings may not completely dissipate, there are some coping mechanisms to help you make it through this difficult season in your life.
- Get professional help – Never be ashamed to go speak with a counselor or therapist that is trained to help people deal with this type of situation on a daily basis. Many insurance companies will help pay for counseling as well as medications if necessary. If money is an issue, there are often churches that offer free counseling. Reach out to a support group. Anything that will help you discuss your feelings is important. Bottling this up inside is only going to lead to worse depression.
- Talk to friends and loved ones – Aside from counseling, let your friends and loved ones be your support system. If they know you well, they probably totally understand and want to be there for you to lean on. Don’t do this alone!
- Stay Busy – Keep your mind and body occupied during this difficult time. Laying on the coach on a regular basis and wishing time to pass will only make it worse.
- Exercise and eat right – This is something we should do all the time but it is amazing how proper food and exercise can truly help one to feel better and give them the energy they may be lacking. Don’t gorge yourself in food to try and ease the pain. In the end, you will get more mad and depressed due to weight gain and how you are feeling about yourself.
- Don’t blow money – many times buying things and going on huge shopping sprees can make one feel great. That is until the bill comes in! Be careful to not let your depression take over and you end up getting more depressed come January when you owe creditors a tremendous amount of cash!
- Socialize – It is best to not be alone so much during the holidays. If there is a function you can attend to help you laugh and get your mind off things, then do it! Maybe now is the right time to call that friend you know you have been meaning to call and meet up for coffee.
