According to Midwives Alliance of North America, there are approximately 15,000 practicing midwives in the United States. Many people mistakenly believe that their only role is to help deliver babies, but a large part of a midwife’s job is to support women in making informed and healthy decisions throughout their lives—not just during pregnancy. Midwives are there to encourage, guide, motivate and answer any number of questions a women may have.
Until the advent of modern medicine, many women died from childbirth. Throughout history, the midwife has played a significant role in child delivery and many people respect the profession. Expecting mothers relied on her for her knowledge and childbirth skills.
Today, midwives obviously still help with childbirth, but also do much more. They are available to answer any questions you may have regarding pregnancy, health, childbirth and more.
A certified nurse-midwife (CNM) is a registered nurse who has completed one of the advanced programs accredited by the American College of Nurse Midwives. The goal of the CNM is to be available to encourage, listen and assist women throughout various stages of life.
